Glossary

What is a backlink profile?

A backlink profile describes external links to your website: which sites link, which pages they point to and the text used for those links. Context and origin matter alongside the number of links.

What should you look at?

Check the referring domains, the relevance of each reference and the destination a visitor reaches. Many links from one site differ from references by several relevant organisations. A link to a removed page can also leave the visitor without a useful next step.

How can you use the information?

Review references to important services and projects. If a client or partner links to an outdated address, restore an appropriate destination or ask for a targeted correction. Compare the findings with Search Console and received enquiries; a third-party authority score is not search traffic or revenue.

Prefer relevant references to purchased quantities

Make your work and expertise worth referring to. Buying or exchanging links primarily to manipulate rankings can fall under Google’s link-spam policies. An unfamiliar link alone is not a reason to reject links automatically or submit a disavow file.
